We made a set of 5 highly integrated gallery benches to support the RISD GD Commons Gallery as a place for exhibitions, lectures, and gatherings. The space presented several challenges and opportunities. The gallery floor space needed to be kept clear at times, and have seating in flexible arrangements at other times. The large windows in the space are a great place to sit, but the radiator creates awkward conditions for seating. Our solution mitigates these concerns by straddling the radiator, providing ventilation to keep heat convection functioning in the space, and providing handles to easily move the benches into different configurations.
