Lindsay Kinkade, critic in graphic design at RISD, will share current work visualizing public policy, refining communication tools through co-creation workshops with doctors, and initiating public art projects in the heart of Phoenix. She will also introduce her new public work collaborative with Arianne Gelardin, Assembly Required.

About Lindsay

Lindsay Kinkade is a community-based designer, public artist, teacher, and documentary journalist. She is the co-founder of Little Giant, a design firm that builds tools for public dialogue on public issues. The studio partners with public artists, community activists, non-profits, government agencies, hospitals, business owners, expert educators, illustrators, photographers, video professionals, web geniuses, and others who are focused on making the world a better place.

A former visual journalist at The Boston Globe, Lindsay brings an ethical framework and research rigor to every project. As a RISD MFA grad, she brings a love of collaboration and a deep commitment to the highest levels of design craft to her public work. She maximizes possibilities by drawing on her hybrid training to facilitate user-designed dialogue and innovations in the public sphere. She is the founding Design + Communication Coordinator for NSF EPSCoR at RISD, a climate change design research project in the state of Rhode Island. Lindsay is currently working from downtown Phoenix, Arizona, in a collaborative workspace at Arizona State University’s Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory (PURL).

Her primary research interests are public engagement, participatory design practice, public policy, and data visualization. She is an adjunct faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design where she teaches Making It Understandable, a policy+design course.

When considered alongside other visionaries responsible for ground-breaking designs (think Frank Lloyd Wright and the Eames), Jobs also ran a multi-national public company. As his career progressed, he became the actual, and adopted, chief of more and more people: from geeks, to designers, to animators, to musicians, to telecom workers, to retailers, etc. Whether they worked for Apple or not, people associated with those fields voluntarily chose him as their leader — me included.

Jobs’ passion and drive was enough to attract followers, but with blockbuster product after product coming out, he had everyone listening. What makes a new Apple product great is that it’s unimaginable before it’s released, but once it is, we can’t think of a better solution. This happened again and again, always with Jobs on stage grinning enthusiastically as he revealed world-changing designs. You can relive these moments in the now legendary videos of the release of the Macintosh and the iMac and the iPod Nano. In his Facetime chat with Jonathan Ive during the iPhone 4 release, he said that he grew up with the Jetsons and that the day had come to make video calls. We all smiled with him. It was as if he had landed on the moon. But unlike space travel, he was going to take us there with him.

The emotional void from Jobs’ death makes me ask questions of those who remain on top — the elected politicians, heads of universities, corporations and non-profits. Do they skate — as Jobs and hockey player Wayne Gretzky once did — “to where the puck is going to be, and not to where it has been”? What visions do our leaders have? Where do their passions lie? Will they learn from Steve Jobs to not conduct polls, or cut corners, or make excuses, or settle for less? If they do, I will support them as a voter, as a customer or as an admirer.

Rest in peace, Steve, and thank you for your leadership and inspiration.

We have adapted his protocol to use Apple’s Photo Booth application. Originally planned as a call for submissions to anyone wanting to participate, the protocol is used to standardize portraits of those affiliated with the Office.

 

Current protocol

Open the Photo Booth application on your Macintosh. Use the four-frame option. This will take four photographs in sequence (just like traditional photo booths). Choose one frame from the four and upload to your member profile page. Verify that the proportion of the image is 640×480. Resolution depends on your computer display.

For some background on this idea and suggestions on making an interesting portrait, read Adam’s original protocol below.

 

Original protocol

To pay homage to the imminently disappearing analog photo booth, and to reawaken the appreciation of slowness in the creative process, we are initiating a call for submissions for all local designers to make a pilgrimage to the Providence Peter Pan/Bonanza Bus Station.

We ask you to make use of the photo booth and the beautiful prints it can produce by conceiving of a concept of how to represent yourself (and your work) through portraits. We found that the booth, with it’s timed exposures, traditional color photographs, and analog quirkiness, has a high potential to capture intriguing ideas. Show us that you agree!

Instructions:

  1. Execute your concept. Scan the results and e-mail them to the D.O. as 300dpi jpegs.

Suggestions:

  1. Bring props
  2. Work with the timing of exposures
  3. Bring your own color background
  4. Do nothing
  5. Sing a song
  6. Interact with the space/camera
  7. Create a narrative

Come to Kreatelier in Providence to play with Letterboxes — our cardboard boxes that you can stack and arrange to form shapes and letters. The folks at Kreatelier design and sell a wide variety of products, including window treatments, interior accents and fashion accessories. In addition to a storefront, local designers run kraft workshops on weekends for children on a long table in the store. During retail hours, you’ll find kids and parents drawing, gluing and stacking our boxes.
